My Events for 2011
2011 Round up.
Millers Oils BTRDA 1400 Champion & BRC Challenge Ladies Champion.

No one, let alone Kaz, could have predicted the fantastic year that lay ahead for the top Gloucestershire co-driver, picking up a total of five top awards, and firmly putting her stamp on the title as one of the best UK female co-drivers.
Kaz Watts has been competing in two of the countries top-line championships in 2011 – the BTRDA Millers Oils 1400 Championship with Darren Pinchin in the Proton Satria 1400, and the British Rally Championship Challenge (BRCC), sat alongside Becky Kirvan in the KC Rally Team Ford Fiesta.
With the season getting off to a flying start with Darren in the BTRDA 1400’s, Kaz picked up three maximum points hauls on the trot – the Wyedean, her home event, the Cumbrian classic, The Malcolm Wilson and Somerset stages.
During her Millers Oils BTRDA 1400 campaign, Kaz joined forces with Becky Kirvan and the KC Rally Team to compete in the KC Ford Fiesta ST and tackle the British Rally Championship Challenge – a proving ground for young talent looking to make the step up in to British Rally Championship.

A new pairing with Kaz and Becky saw the pair get off to a steady start, learning a new car and building confidence between the team. The Bulldog Rally was the first round of the new championship and saw the all-female team pick up 3rd in class in the North Wales forests.
A trip back up North for the Pirelli International Rally saw Kaz and Becky head in to the forests of “Killer Kielder” – so named amongst rally fans for very fast, long straights and deep ditches, known to catch out those who don’t treat the stages with respect.
Another third in class on the Pirelli showed Becky and Kaz had the pace and the confidence in the team was growing. The next round of the BRC Challenge was moving to tarmac so the team faced another new challenge.
Before Kaz and Becky could head to the tarmac rally of the Jim Clark Memorial, Kaz moved back in to the Proton Satria to partner Darren Pinchin in the BTRDA 1400’s on the Plains Rally.
The Plains Rally, the previous year, was not a great event for the pair, so looking to get to the end they stared the event with a cautious approach. With Justin Lawson returning to the BTRDA 1400’s for a few selected events the fight wasn’t going to be easy. By the end of the day the pair conceded first place and settled for 2nd in the 1400’s, taking enough points to maintain their overall lead in the championship.

Returning to partner Becky Kirvan in the KC Rally Team Ford Fiesta, Kaz and Becky headed back North for the all-tarmac Jim Clark Memorial Rally. One of only a few tarmac outings for the pair, they wuld get off to a disappointing start losing a lot of time with a puncture and a faulty jack.
“We were really disappointed” Karen said. “We’d had such a good time through the earlier stages and then to lose all that and nearly go out of the event with a puncture.”
The pair managed to put points on the board for the third consecutive event and picked up 5th in class on their first tarmac outing together.
Meanwhile, back in the BTRDA 1400’s, Kaz rejoined Darren for the Dukeries Rally, based in the Sherwood Forest complex around Mansfield. After the rapid start to the season, it wasn’t going to be all plain sailing though, with an off on one of the opening stages.
“We were travelling down a short stretch of tarmac which turned in to gravel on the corner just down from the start. We knew the tarmac was slippery under the trees so made sure we broke early but the car wouldn’t stop – we ended up sliding sideways into the ditch but managed to get back out. It seems to have caught quite a few crews out. It wasn’t the end of our dramas for that stage – we picked up a puncture just before the end.
“The service crew did a fantastic job in service and got the car through the rest of the day – I really can’t thank them enough. We managed to get the car to the finish and picked up a second place.”
Maintaining their lead in the Millers Oils BTRDA 1400 Championship, the crew headed in to Wales for the Nicky Grist Quinton Stages, with an outside chance of clinching the title with two rounds remaining.
“We knew what we had to do and despite it being a tall order we went in focused on the championship”.
The event wasn’t going to be easy and despite leading for much of the event, the Proton Satria crew slid wide on a corner in Halfway – losing 2 ½ minutes and the rally lead.

“To be honest, when we finished, we had no idea we’d wrapped up the Millers Oils 1400 Championship. It wasn’t until later that evening we were told Darren had got the title and then the next day when we had it confirmed I’d just pipped Karen Robinson to the Co-Drivers title”.
With the Millers Oils BTRDA 1400 crown wrapped up, Kaz could return to concentrating on co-driving Becky Kirvan back in the BRC Challenge. The next outing for the paid continued their run on tarmac and crossed the Irish Sea for the Todds Leap International Rally Northern Ireland.
In a huge turn of pace, Kaz and Becky managed to battle through the notoriously difficult event, whilst the competition fell foul of the slippery conditions, to pick up their first class win in only their second tarmac outing together.
“It was a great feeling. We’d been working towards this all year and it really helped to bolster the feeling of confidence throughout the team.”
With the BTRDA 1400 Championship wrapped up for both Kaz and Darren, the pressure would be lifted from them on the Woodpecker Stages, the penultimate round of the BTRDA Championship and a qualifying round of the Welsh National Championship and Swisher MSA English Rally Championship.
Not everything was going to go in Kaz’s favour on the Woodpecker with a broken driveshaft in the last stage dropping them from 2nd, just 8 seconds behind Lawson, back to 5th overall, picking up 3rd in Championship points.
It was to become clear just before the Trackrod Rally of Yorkshire that it was going to be the final round of the British Rally Championship and the Challenge, with the Rally Isle of Man being cancelled.

With the final foray in to the forests of 2011 for Kaz and Becky they were keen to really put their stamp on the event, after a class win on the previous round in Northern Ireland.
After a confident start, and pushing to take 10th overall, Kaz explains what happened next;
“I had my head down, reading the notes, when I heard Becky on the intercom say we had no brakes. Heading in to a fast downhill square right, Becky was doing everything she could to slow the car down but we left the road and hit a tree. We landed upside down in a ditch but thankfully we were both okay, a bit sore and bruised, but eager to get the KC Ford Fiesta fixed and back out.”
“We picked up the BRC Challenge Ladies Title which softens the blow a little”.
The off ended their year on a bit of a low but the team planned to get the Ford Fiesta fixed and back out to compete on the World Rally Championship round, Wales Rally GB.
Back to the final round of the BTRDA Rally Series, having picked up the Millers Oils BTRDA 1400 Title, Kaz was concentrating on the Welsh National 2wd Title with Darren and taking on the Cambrian Rally.
In a drama packed event, which saw the pair nearly not make the start due to an electrical fault, the pair took the Proton Satria home 2nd in the 1400’s and picking up yet another maximum championship points.
The final event of the year, with all the championship points counted and dropped scores taken in to account, meant Kaz had secured no less than 5 titles in 2011!
Together with the Millers Oils BTRDA 1400 Championship and BRC Challenge Ladies Title, Kaz picked up the Hankook Welsh National 2WD Co-Driver and BTRDA Ladies Co-Driver Award with her maximum points on the Cambrian Rally. Finally, even without contesting the Tempest Rally, Kaz picked up the Swisher MSA English Rally Co-Driver Champion title for the second consecutive year.

Four Rally Titles and Counting for Kaz
Gloucestershire co-driver Kaz Watts will be have to buy a larger trophy cabinet soon after picking up another two rally championship title on the weekends Cambrian Rally, based out of the Seaside town of Llandudno.
It’s been a year of ups and downs for Kaz, picking up the BTRDA Millers Oils 1400 championship with two rounds remaining, and then crashing out heavily on the Trackrod International Rally Yorkshire. She’s maintained a positive outlook though which has allowed her to pick up the Welsh National 2wd co driver award and Proton Satria driver, Darren Pinchin, to take B9 class win also Kaz pick up the BTRDA Ladies Co-Driver award by just two points from Ella Flynn.
The Cambrian Rally, run around the North Wales forests of Penmachno, Clocaenog and Alwen, played host to the final round of the championship. With Kaz and Darren having already wrapped up the main titles the pair had planned a steady run through the wet stages to ensure they bought the car home in one piece.
“We nearly didn’t get to the start of the event!” explained Kaz. “The car wouldn’t start on Saturday morning so it was a mad panic to find and fix the fault. It turned out there was a wire broken in the loom so a quick fix from Darren and the service team meant we made it to the Llandudno Seafront with just 5 minutes to spare”.
With overnight rain continuing in to the morning stages, the gravel roads were very slippery and treacherous in places. Having put the car off the road on the event back in 2009, Kaz and Darren were keen not to make the same mistake again.
“We were going past the place we crashed a few years ago so I reigned Darren in. He was very cautious through the area and to our surprise our main rival, Justin Lawson, was off in exactly the same spot.
“Once we’d got through the Penmachno stages we turned the wick up a bit. Hefin Lloyd Davis was on a flyer and it was good to have a bit of a ding-dong battle with someone after Justin’s off.”
The final couple of stages saw Kaz and Darren swap time with Hefin in his Vauxhall Corsa, culminating in a 13th fastest stage time up The Great Orme on the penultimate stage of the event finishing just 10 secs behind Hefin – it ended up being a great battle and we were glad to finish this event.
“That’s it for rallying this year with Darren – we’re not planning on coming back out in the Proton until our home event, The Wyedean Rally, in February next year. I’m still in with a shout at the MSA English Rally Championship but will have to wait until after the Tempest Rally in November.
“I must thank my sponsors for all their help this year with Darren in the Proton. Without Gibson Forest Trading Post and Castle Woodcraft I would never have clinched all these championships – it’s been great to work with everyone in the team.

Nightmare becomes Dream for Kaz

David Benson/RallySport Media.Co-Driver Kaz Watts has already clinched the Millers Oils BTRDA 1400 Championship, along with Proton driver Darren Pinchin and the BRC Challenge Ladies Championship in 2011, with driver Becky Kirvan. Not wanting to rest on her laurels, she is now embarking on the ultimate test, whilst fulfilling a lifetime ambition – competing on Wales Rally GB, the British round of the World Rally Championship.
If we roll back a few weeks though, it’s not all been easy for Gloucestershire based Co-Driver, Kaz Watts.Since securing the Millers Oils BTRDA 1400 Championship back in July, Kaz and Darren Pinchin, in their Gibsons Forest Trading Post and Castlewoodcraft backed Proton Satria, were looking forward to a good, clean run on the Ludlow based Woodpecker Rally. The pair needing to pick up as many points as possible to help in their MSA Swisher English Rally Championship and Welsh Clubman Championship campaigns.
The event got off to a good start, swapping times throughout the day with rapid rival Justin Lawson, in the Vauxhall Nova. Heading in to the last stage, Ludlows infamous Haye Park, the pair were just 8 seconds behind.
“We were really confident we could take the win” said Kaz, “but just one mile in we broke a driveshaft. We ended up continuing through the stage as fast as we could but haemorrhaged too much time.
“We were obviously pleased to have got to the end of the event, picked up some needed points in the English and Welsh championships but were disappointed not to have put a big seal on our BTRDA 1400 crown.”
Again, having been crowned BRC Challenge Ladies Champions on the last round of the British Rally Championship, The International Rally of Northern Ireland, Kaz, together with driver Becky Kirvan, had looked strong and confident going in to the final round of the season, the Trackrod International Rally Yorkshire in the KC Rally Team Ford Fiesta.
The North Yorkshire based event is notorious for its super fast forests and fierce competition – it’s also driver Becky’s home event. Getting off to a good start, the pair were lying within touch of 10th spot after three stages.
“Stage 4 was the long one of the event so we wanted a big push to take 10th in the Challenge” explained Kaz.
“I had my head down, reading the notes, when I heard Becky on the intercom say we had no brakes. Heading in to a fast downhill square right, Becky was doing everything she could to slow the car down but we left the road and hit a tree. We landed upside down in a ditch but thankfully we were both okay, a bit sore and bruised, but eager to get the KC Ford Fiesta fixed and back out.
“The car’s going to need a lot of work but Tim Rodgers, our team manager, does a great job and will get us ready and back out in the Fiesta ST on our next event.”
Kaz is due to contest the final round of the BTRDA Rally Series, the Cambrian Rally, based in Llandudno, with Darren Pinchin in the Proton Satria. It will the perfect opportunity for Kaz to gain some experience of the Wales Rally GB stages, which Kaz has just announced she will be contesting.
“It’s been a life long ambition to compete – I watch the rally every year, either on TV or out in the stages, but to actually get in the car every morning and compete is going to be something I’ll never forget.”
Kaz will be back alongside Becky Kirvan in the Ford Fiesta ST, competing in the British round of the World Rally Championship, with support from Cristal Global. The Stallingborough based company employ nearly 4,000 people on five continents and they are the second largest titanium dioxide producer in the world, the largest producer of merchant titanium chemicals and the leading manufacturer of specialty titanium products.
“It’s great to have support from such a large company. The pair of us are looking forward to bouncing back from the Trackrod and really putting on a show for the spectators and our sponsors.”

Todds Leap Ulster Rally 2011

David Benson/RallySport Media.Top Gloucestershire co-driver, Kaz Watts, brought home a first in class on the notoriously difficult Todds Leap Ulster Rally – round five of the British Rally Championship Challenge support series.
The all-tarmac event, based around the North Antrim lanes, takes in famous and challenging stages including Torr Head, which runs along the rugged Irish coastline. Full of bumps, jumps, twists and turns, Kaz and driver, Becky Kirvan, did well just to get to the finish.
Many of their closest competitors fell foul to the challenging conditions on day one, either leaving the road on the slippery tarmac or suffering mechanical difficulties. Kaz and Becky in the KC Rally Team backed Ford Fiesta ST kept a cool head to enter the overnight halt lying 9th Overall and 3rd in Class RC5.
There was no gentle wake up for the crew starting on Saturday morning with Kaz and Becky starting the day on the longest stage of the rally – 15.5 miles over the testing Slieve Gallion hills.
“It’s a long stage and can often be make or break. We got a good rhythm going in the car and felt really comfortable, passing a couple of cars that had left the road. We had one moment in the stage when we discovered an old man crossing the stage. I’m not sure who was more shocked!”
Back from Slieve Gallion the pair headed north for the Lisnamuck stage. A very tight and twisty stage, Kaz and Becky discovered a problem with their steering.
“We got straight out of the stage and headed back to service. The team did an amazing job, fixing the fault and getting us back out on the stage within the 30 minute allotted time.
“We were ready for a big push in the last stage, lying only 2 seconds behind 8th overall, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be – the final stage was cancelled as a car had crashed.
“We were disappointed not to take the fight for 8th but happy to hear the crew was safe and well”.
Kaz, Becky and the KC Rally Team are looking forward to taking the fight back to the competition on the next round of the BRC Challenge, the Trackrod International Rally of Yorkshire where Kaz is 6th oa and 2nd in her class in the BRC Championship Co. Drivers.
Firstly though, Kaz will be returning to the BTRDA Rally Series for the first time with Darren Pinchin in the Proton Satria since being crowned Millers Oils 1400 Rally Champions.

Quinton Stages Rally 2011
Karen Watts and Darren Pinchin clinch Title on Quinton Stages Rally
Karen Watts and Darren Pinchin did just enough on the Nicky Grist Quinton Stages to tie up both the Co-Drivers and Drivers titles in the BTRDA Rally Series Millers Oils 1400 Championship, with two rounds remaining.
The Gloucestershire co-driver together with driver, Darren Pinchin, started the event keen to put the drama of the Dukeries Rally behind them as they headed in to the Welsh forests, first on the road, behind the wheel of their Proton Satria.
With the rain falling in the run up to the rally, combined with being the first car to tackle the tricky forest stages, Kaz and Darren would the pair to put down the racing lines, mark the braking points and set the standard for all the other crews to follow.
Things got off to a great start in the opening loop of stages with the pair building up a leading margin of 50 seconds over their closest rival, Marcel Freling and Karen Robinson in the MGZR.
Heading in to stage 6, a re-run of Halfway – a stage synonymous with battles in the World Rally Championship – Kaz and Darren came unstuck and the car got sucked in to a ditch.
“I’ve got to admit I thought it was our rally over. We came around a fast left-hander in to a hairpin right and just ran too wide. The spectators did a great job, jumped in to the water, got a towrope and pulled us out in about 2 and a half minutes.
“We’d lost too much time to catch back up with the leaders so decided to bring the car home to the finish.
“To be honest, when we finished, we had no idea we’d wrapped up the Millers Oils 1400 Championship. It wasn’t until later that evening we were told Darren had got the title and then the next day when we had it confirmed I’d just pipped Karen Robinson to the Co-Drivers title”.
Kaz and Darren still have more titles to play for – they will continue with the remaining two rounds of the BTRDA Rally Series – The Woodpecker Rally and The Cambrian Rally – and are aiming to pick up the MSA English Rally Championship, which Kaz is leading and Darren is just two points behind the leader.
Kaz is also leading the Welsh National Championship 2wd Co-Driver championship plus still needs a few more points to claim the BTRDA Rally Series Lady Co-Driver award, which has four female co-drivers currently in contention.
The team are supported by Gibsons ‘The Forest Trading Post’, Gotherington Cross Garage and APD Motor Factors, plus had great support from Tim Cross, Nigel Jenkins and Richard Eayrs who all helped Darren get the car ready for the Quinton Stages.
There’s no rest though – Kaz will be back in action in August, returning to the British Rally Championship Challenge alongside Becky Kirvan in the KC Rally Team Ford Fiesta on the Todds Leap Ulster Rally in Northern Ireland.

Jim Clark Memorial Rally, 27 - 28 May 2011
Kaz Continues Fine Form on Jim Clark

David Benson/RallySport Media.
Neither Becky nor Karen had competed on the all-tarmac event before, which was based around the Scottish borders town of Kelso, providing even more of a challenge on the unique, narrow and very fast lanes.
Looking forward to the event, and planning a steady start to gain experience, Karen and Becky headed in to the spectator stage around Duns town centre.
“The Duns Town stage was brilliant – we both loved the excitement of racing through the town and it was great to see so many people out cheering us on.”
Heading in to the final two stages of the Friday evening, the crew caught a car in front of them, costing them a little time, but were both really enjoying the new stages.
The final stage of the evening, and full of confidence, the pair suffered a puncture. Electing to stop and change the wheel they discovered that their jack was faulty which forced them to drive the remaining few miles on it.
“We were really disappointed” Karen said. “We’d had such a good time through the earlier stages and then to lose all that and nearly go out of the event with a puncture.”
Heading in to the Saturday stages, Karen and Becky realized they had little to lose and went on a big push for maximum fun and gain some vital experience of the roads and tarmac surface.
“It was great being off the leash. We’d lost too much time on the Friday evening so decided that the best thing to do would be to enjoy ourselves – and that, we did! “We managed to avoid the rain showers which had caught some of the other guys at the front of the field and got back to Duns – we’re both really happy with the performance and look forward to getting back out soon.”
Karen and Becky went on to finish the event; taking 5th in class and 23rd Overall.
Karen will be out with Darren Pinchin next on the Dukeries Rally, based out of Mansfield. Karen and Darren are challenging for the Millers Oils 1400 Championship in their Proton Satria - Karen is currently leading the Millers Oils 1400 Championship Co-Drivers, Swisher MSA English Championship Co-Drivers and BTRDA Rally Series Ladies Co-Driver class’.

Plains rally 14 May 2011
With Darren Pinchin in the proton Satria 1400
Sat with Darren Pinchin in the proton Satria 1400 we were looking forward to gaining and taking as many championship points as we could this was not only a BTRDA round but welsh national round.
7 stages were waiting in the welsh forests 4 before 1st service.
We had stiff competition from Clive Anstey and Justin Lawson and knew we needed to be on it from the begining.
We had no problems and arrived back in service leading the 1400's with a 17 sec lead from our next competitor.
2 long stages was next and then to the wood yard to finish of the day
We kept attacking and knew that clive and justin were both keen to claw back some time on us, heading to Hafron we were both a bit reserved due to our big accident last year when the rally ended for us on this one, we were pushing well and going really well until halfway through lost some time due to a slight confusion with the tape being blown over the road we should of gone and lost us valuable time but still carried on
Lawson was also pushing and we ended up losing time to him on this one, still 2 stages to go and we tryed to pushed on but arriving back at welshpool we ended up 2nd behind lawson but still took good championship points and still leading 1400 overall, our class and I have the lady co driver and also leading the 2wd co driver in the welsh championship.

Pirelli stages 29 - 30 April 2011
With Becky kirvan in Freddie the Fiesta KC rally team
This was our 2nd round on forestry and our aim was to improve on what we learnt on bulldog.
There was some very tough stages ahead but we got very settled into the day very easy and was really improving with speed and setting some good times along the way
With one short service and then back out into the kielder forests we just carried on attacking maxium and trying to work our way up the results board.
We had a trouble free day and car ran brilliant and Becky really improved alot with her full 100% committment.
We arrived back at carlise racecourse taking 2nd in class bringing home some glassware too.
Somerset Stages 16th April 2011
Top Championship points again for Watts and Pinchin.
Somerset Stages was the 3rd round of the BTRDA and based at minehead.
Eleven Stages awaited the crews which saw the day start at 8.00am.
1st stage was only 1.7 long but a tricky chicane that caught us out last year had history repeat on us when it happened again losing a valuable time and then we had to claw the lost time back arriving back into 1st service we were 4th overall in the 1400’s.
The next 2 stages was porlock which is tarmac and a big favourite of mine and darren's we knew we could make some good time up and attack these stages with maximum effort and it paid off going back into 2nd service 3rd o/a
5 stages remained and we knew we had to keep pushing as Clive Anstey who was registered was having a good battle with us throughout the day
Julian Wilkes and Shaun bolt were not registered.
Knuckling down and working well as a team we manage to put some time between us and 4th place Anstey over the last few stages and finish 3rd overall and 1st BTRDA 1400 Finisher taking those max points.
Karen also took for the 2nd time this season highest points for the lady co driver as well as MSA Swisher Championship which sees me leading co driver and Darren joint top with Ashley Slights.

Becky got off to a steady start as it was first time competing in the fiesta
Arriving back in 1st service saw the girls in 21st overall and 3rd in class
Going out for the remainder of the stages including a 15 mile stage it was going to be tough, and with Becky getting more use to car and confidence growing we had a good attack at the afternoon stages and also saw a lot of fellow crews broken down we arrived back at the finish in Welshpool 16th overall and 3rd in class.. And collecting some vital championship points.
Malcolm Wilson Rally 5th March 2011

The duo Lead the field away and had 7 stages ahead of them.
Arriving back in service mid morning the pair were lying in 1st place with 7 secs apart from justin lawson, ahead of them was 2 more stages including 1 of 10miles long and the day got better and better with darren setting some fast times throughout the day with no problems at all the pair arrived back in 2nd service with a 40 sec lead over the next competitor clive anstey as lawson had dropped back due to problems
with the final 2 stages all they had to do was finish and that is what they did arriving back at the finish in the town centre 1st oa 1400, 3rd 2WD crew and a impressive 22nd overall taking the important max championship points.

The Team GMF Wyedean Forest Rally 12 February 2011
Karen Watts takes Top Championship points

Watts and Darren Pinchin got off to a brilliant start to their rally season, finishing 2nd oa on the Wyedean Rally last weekend in the 1400 Category and taking those vital BTRDA 1400 Championship points as wilkes was not registered.
After quite a challenging day having lost the rear brakes from stage 2 the duo seem to put that behind them and keep pushing having a good battle with lawson for who was going to take those top points.
Going into last stage there was 1 second between 2nd and 3rd spot but after completing the last stage pinchin and watts arrived back at chepstow racecourse the championship points winner being 6 secs quicker than lawson.
Darren drove brilliant all day and considering we had the brake problem we still manage to keep going and push as best as we could, as well as taking the BTRDA 1400 Goblets, 2nd in class and Karen taking Highest Lady Codriver in Gloucestershire they took class points on the Welsh National championship with a bonus of Karen winning the £200 Prize money towards Accomodation for the remaining season.
