Severn Valley Stages - 31st May 2008

Once again I teamed up with Alun Roberts in his Peugeot 206 Supercup car for this event.
We were Car 136 in the Clubmans Event. I was really looking forward to this event as it was the first time for Alun and me on a Forestry event .. We did have a little disaster in the week leading upto the event (all I will say is that if you ever want anything posted don't leave it to Alun or his Dad)! They posted the notes and DVD to me and on the Friday day before the event I still had not received the notes ..Luckily after a quick phonecall to Paul Willetts he suggested I give Adie Williams a ring as Adie was in with Stuart Clarke for this event and they were using same notes.. Thanks Adie for helping me out.. I was having a lift down to the event with Walby and Nigel so off we all set at 5.00am and I had the pleasure of sitting in the front with Walby who the night before had been to rugby do! How lovely, if he wasn't belching then it was coming out other ways!!!
I met up with Alun at the Showground in Builth Wells, which is where the rally was based and being used for service. Our start time was 10.06 so not too bad plenty of time to get us ready.
Off we set for the 1st stage which was Esgair Dafydd a 5.57 miler, so a nice little stage to get us into it. no problems through this one and off we set to SS2 Crychan West which was 9.50miles long, again set a good time and we were really both starting to get on quite well with each other, then into our 1st service of the day which was 30mins long, our service crew consisted of Len and Tegid, plus Alun's Dad who was running management for us, with the car checked over it was time to make our way to SS3 Radnor 17.99 miles long, yes that's right all 17.99 miles of it, the weather was now quite warm so we both knew we would looking forward to the finish of this stage.
5,4,3,2,1 Go! 22 pages of notes later and we had finished, what a stage the only thing that I really remember was the fact we took off over a crest on a narrow section, after getting our time we pulled over and were able to get out of the car, as we were both sweating loads. Alun actually poured his bottle of water over himself. still we were pleased to have completed the stage.

Now it was back in to Second Service of the day which this time was 40 minutes long. Then on to the next stage which was SS4 Gwibedog now, how I pronounced this stage name certainly made Alun laugh, mind you I think that goes for most of the Welsh names I try and have a go at saying, never mind it keeps Alun amused, this stage was 5.69 miles long again we had a good run through and I was really enjoying our day. We had now acquired some up to date results which showed us 1st in class, so we knew for the remainder of the rally we needed to keep on the pace but, at the same time not do anything silly.
We had one more stage left SS5 Halfway which was a mere 5.49 miles 5,4,3,2,1 Go! We were determined to have a really good go at this last stage and as we crossed the Flying Finish we both had smiles stretching from ear to ear and knew we had clinched 1st in class. It actually turned out that we had won our class by 3 minutes. So for our first time together on a forest event and we walked away with two nice glass goblets. It was also special for me, as my husband Martin and son Luke were out watching, also Colin and Steve our friends and fellow Forest of Dean Club members were also able to come along and support us
A special thank you to Meirion (Alun's Dad) also to Len and Tegid our brilliant Service Crew for keeping us going all day.
I must also acknowledge Chris Huish for sending these pics, you can see more of his work at www.chrishuishrallyphotos.co.uk
